Unlike most of the other young directors of the Thaw Era, who filmed their contemporaries in the streets and spaces of modern cities, Sergei Parajanov found his inspiration in the Carpathian mountains at the turn of the century. The untouched mountain slopes, colorful costumes and piercing Hutsul songs are the raw material for Parajanov’s cinematic visions. With unbridled artistic gestures, the film throws standard narrative and dramatic templates overboard. Transcending temporal and national boundaries, the story of two young lovers from rival families emerges from a whirl of colors, sounds and music. (nf/gv)
